Japan’s first robot wedding ceremony

At a time when the United States is still divided on the issue of making same sex marriage unions legal, to the point that it is likely to be a major issue during the 2016 presidential election, here in Japan robots are already tying the knot.

The happy couple, Frois and Roborin, will exchange vows and host their guests at the Aoyama CAY venue in Tokyo on June 27th.

While the event is open to the public, attendance must be reserved in advance since the wedding facility can only accommodate 100 guests. Dress code is formal attire. There is a 10,000 yen fee to participate which includes the reception, meal, and all you can drink.

The reception will include entertainment by popular Japanese talent Jinnai Tomonori and SoftBank’s well-known PEPPER communication robot. They also plan to show a ‘memories’ video with highlights about the happy couple, their childhood, how they met and fell in love, and the eventual marriage proposal.

Those not familiar with the intimate details of Japanese life might be a little surprised to find out that Frois, the groom, full name is “Furoisurobo”, which makes sense since his head is the typical sitting stool used when indulging in a Japanese ofuro/bath.

The event, and this really is an ‘event’ in the true sense of the word, is the brainchild of Maywa Denki, a wild, sometimes wacky, always delightful, art unit founded in 1993 by Nobumichi Tosa and his brother. Over the years they have produced numerous ad hoc productions, always on the cutting edge, always trying to provoke thought, curiosity, and debate. This robot wedding will be no exception.
